Expert on One Show tells Jermaine Jenas to stop using the term panic buying

As the UK continues to be gripped by the current fuel crisis, with many petrol stations running dry, an behavioural science expert has told One Show host Jermaine Jenas he needs to stop saying the term panic buying.

Appearing on the One Show Professor Steven Reicher explained how hearing that other people are "panic buying" is causing the crisis to develop further.

He said: "The main problem lies in the term panic buying because if you listen to people at the pumps what they are saying is look I'm a nurse, I'm a midwife...I've got a job, I have got fill up. If everybody else is buying up petrol I can't be at the back of the queue."

While Jermaine tried to argue that it was the media's job and duty to inform people what was going on, Steven said:

"They believe that everybody else is panic buying, because YOU Jermaine, are using the term panic buying."

He added: "So STOP saying panic buying!"

Jermaine took the advice on board, saying: "Noted, Steve, noted."

Currently, the government has put the Armed Forces on standby to help deliver fuel, however, the government also believes the situation is slowly stabilising.

The One Show is on every weeknight from 7 PM on BBC1.
