Clair Obscur, following the impressive performance of Expedition 33, could be on the path of becoming a fully fledged franchise, the game's director said during a recent interview. Keeping the details confidential, he said Expedition 33 is “not the end” of the series, but just one of many stories.
Speaking with YouTube content creator MrMattyPlays (via The Gamer), Sandfall Interactive chief executive and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Guillaume Broche said his latest game is just one of many stories to be told in the Clair Obscur franchise, heavily implying more games in the series are to come. He cemented that Clair Obscur “is the franchise name,” and this latest title is “one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise.”
“Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what's sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise,” Broche said.
It doesn't get more clear-cut than that. During the interview itself, Broche noted how he was already in the process of writing sequels and working out new ideas, though the details he revealed overall are quite sparse and do not go into specifics. These sequels and ideas could end up in the back of a long pile of papers somewhere, but it's nice to know the devs are already brainstorming the future of this fantastic series.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of 2025's most successful titles, and one of the best RPGs in recent memory. Its impeccable writing and art direction, combined with an innovative take on JRPG-esque turn-based combat, attracted millions and placed it high in gaming history, with a 93 average Metacritic rating.
It would've been something amazing to cause the devs to back off and pursue new ventures, but now we can officially get excited about a new Clair Obscur story, possibly revolving around some previous expeditions when the Paintress was much more mysterious.
