Expected Bristol Rovers team to play Hull City with Oztumer and Nicholson knocking on door

Ben Garner's Bristol Rovers side have been forced to wait to try to extend their four-game unbeaten run in League One, but they are back in action on Tuesday as Hull City visit the Mem.

Saturday's trip to Accrington Stanley was called off after eight Stanley players tested positive for coronavirus, but Garner has done everything he can on the training ground to ensure it doesn't disrupt Rovers momentum.

The Rovers boss enters the game – against a side in the top three and tipped for promotion – with plenty of selection decisions to make, such is the depth of his squad after a busy summer of recruitment.

Garner has named an unchanged starting XI throughout this unbeaten run, but with Erhun Oztumer and Sam Nicholson impressing from the bench last time out the manager may look to shuffle the pack.

Ali Koiki and Ben Liddle are awaiting their debuts, too, so Garner is certainly not short of options. This is the XI Bristol Live expects him to pick.

Defence

Only a last-minute fitness concern will see Garner shuffle his back five for this game. Anssi Jaakkola is a certainty to start in goal, and there is no reason to break up the back three of Max Ehmer, Jack Baldwin and Cian Harries.

That trio is developing good chemistry as this team gels by the game.

Josh Hare and David Tutonda will retain their wing-back berths, too, after sensational starts to the new campaign.

Alfie Kilgour will offer centre-back cover from the bench, and Luke Leahy, Michael Kelly and Koiki are options the manager will have up his sleeve if required. Alex Rodman and Mark Little are ruled out.

Midfield

Zain Westbrooke is a pivotal part o Garner's plans in the heart of midfield and he will be tasked with dictating the tempo.

Alongside Westbrooke will be Josh Grant once again. Grant had a very difficult first half against Shrewsbury Town last time out, but he improved greatly in the second period and he will be rewarded with another start.

Rovers did ride their luck at times at New Meadow, but the game became much easier to manage when the quality on the ball of Sam Nicholson and Oztumer was introduced in the second half, and either have a good chance of replacing Luke McCormick in the XI.

The on-loan Chelsea has been impressive in this unbeaten run, but Rovers need more fluency on the ball and ultimately Oztumer is the most likely to get the nod.

Ben Liddle, Ed Upson and Tom Mehew are holding options for the bench, and Jayden Mitchell-Lawson is "touch and go" to make the squad with a muscle niggle.

Attack

Since Garner shifted to a 3-5-2, his top two picks itself with Jonah Ayunga out injured.

Brandon Hanlan will lead the line with speed and strength, and he is likely to be paired with James Daly. The pair have contributed five league goals between them thus far and there are signs of a partnership developing.

Garner could be tempted to play Nicholson up top alongside Hanlan, as he did late on at Shrewsbury, but against a decent Hull side the manager will likely prefer the endeavour of Daly from the start with the Scotsman in reserve as an impact option.

Rovers (3-4-1-2): Jaakkola; Ehmer (c), Baldwin, Harries; Hare, Westbrooke, Grant, Tutonda; Oztumer; Hanlan, Daly.
