Expected Bristol Rovers team to play Accrington Stanley with Upson and Ogogo injured

If you were looking for a game to end a five-match winless streak, Accrington Stanley away on a wintry Tuesday night would be atop few Bristol Rovers' fans lists.

But that is the challenge facing Paul Tisdale and the Gas. They need a result the Crown Ground after Saturday's deflating defeat to relegation rivals Rochdale.

Tisdale has persisted with a back five in recent weeks, but the time has come to revert to the four-man defensive base which brought good results before Christmas now key players have returned from injury.

The Gas responded to a dismal performance at Oxford United 10 days ago with a brave effort at Peterborough United. Tisdale will be looking for something similar from his team against play-off chasing Stanley.

Defence

Joe Day was culpable for Alex Newby's winning goal on Saturday, but he is likely to retain his place in goal with Jordi van Stappershoef on the bench.

With Jack Baldwin nursing an injury picked up at Peterborough and touch and go to play on Tuesday, Max Ehmer and Alfie Kilgour could be paired at the heart of the back four.

George Williams and Luke Leahy are set to play at full-back.

Josh Hare, Mark Little, David Tutonda, Ali Koiki and Cian Harries are options for the bench.

Midfield

Experienced holding midfielders Ed Upson and Abu Ogogo have both suffered muscle injuries in the past fortnight. They are unlikely to be involved on Tuesday, giving the Gas midfield a more youthful look.

Josh Grant is likely to be deployed in a holding role, with Zain Westbrooke and Luke McCormick given box-to-box jobs either side of him.

Tisdale was not pleased with Erhun Oztumer's performance against Rochdale at the weekend, but the playmaker is likely to get the nod at the head of the diamond.

Ogogo and Upson's injuries increase the playing chances for Cameron Hargreaves and Ben Liddle, while Alex Rodman and Josh Barrett could make the bench.

Attack

Brandon Hanlan and Sam Nicholson could not make the most of their chances at the weekend, but they are sure to be trusted again in the starting XI.

Jonah Ayunga will feature among the substitutes, and Tisdale will be desperate for James Daly to be fit enough to make the bench.

Rovers (4-3-1-2): Day; Williams, Ehmer (c), Kilgour, Leahy; Grant, Westbrooke, McCormick; Oztumer; Hanlan, Nicholson.
