Expect Vikings DB Jayron Kearse to match up more against tight ends

Earlier this week, we learned Vikings defensive back Jayon Kearse would be playing more nickel in 2019.

It sounds like his role, though, will be similar to what it was like in the past, with Kearse matching up on other team’s tight ends.

“Jayron has played underneath for us a lot in the last couple years in different packages that we’ve used playing at the safety,” defensive coordinator George Edwards said this week. “Being able to make that communication and transition from week to week has been a benefit for us because he matches up against tight ends underneath real good for us. He’s embraced that role for we just look for him to continue to develop.”

Kearse, 25, has the unique size at 6’4 to match up with other team’s tight ends. With Trey Burton, Jimmy Graham and now T.J. Hockenson in the division, that’s important.

It’s a big year for Kearse as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
