Expect rookie running back Travis Homer to compete for 3rd-down spot

Seattle found success in the run game last season, leading the league in rushing. With Chris Carson and last year’s top pick, Rashaad Penny, in line to return to the No. 1 and 2 spots, selecting a running back in the 2019 NFL draft didn’t seem like a priority for the Seahawks.

But that didn’t stop general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll from finding a player in the later rounds. Seattle selected running back Travis Homer out of Miami with the No. 204 overall pick, on Saturday.

“He can play an every down back,” Schneider explained after the draft. “He’s really tough. He’s only 20 years old. He’s a grit guy for us, hell of a special teams player.”

The Homer addition gives Seattle six running backs on the roster. Carson and Penny seem settled as the Seahawks’ one-two punch, but the third spot on gamedays is now up for grabs.

“He can play on third down,” Schneider continued. “We actually had him in the third down category because he had such good hands coming out of the backfield. Really good instincts. Just a really, really tough.”

Expect Homer to give C.J. Prosise and J.D. McKissic a run for their money come training camp.
