MUMBAI: Congress leader and state revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat and NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik on Friday said that they expected better sense to prevail and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to take a decision on nominations to the legislative council as early as possible in view of the observations of the Bombay high court.
“No doubt, the high court has not given specific directions to the governor, but Koshyari must understand the spirit of the HC order.
It is high time that Koshyari appoints 12 eminent persons on the legislative council as per the recommendations of the state cabinet,” Thorat told TOI.
Malik said it was unfortunate that despite the unanimous recommendation of the state cabinet in November last year, the governor was not taking any decision on the appointment of 12 persons from different walks of life on the legislative council.
“The high court has made it clear that it can’t give directions to a person who is holding a constitutional post, but it has also observed that there should be better coordination between the government and the governor,” Malik said.
Malik said it is a fact that no timeframe has been fixed for the government to take a decision on the recommendation of the cabinet, but now, in view of the observations of the high court, the NCP expects that the governor will take a decision as early as possible. “The governor must realize that he holds a constitutional post, and his decisions should be apolitical.
