Expats weigh in on coronation

Expatriates in Thailand are looking forward to the coronation of His Majesty the King.

Rodney McNeil, an Australian editor at NBT World, said he is interested in the auspicious occasion because most historic events in Thailand feature religious rituals and cultural performances.

"The coronation of King Rama X is an opportunity of a lifetime. Many foreigners are looking forward to seeing traditional customs," he said.

Mr McNeil told the Bangkok Post that he enjoyed following preparations ahead of the coronation ceremony.

"I read the newspaper a few days ago and feasted my eyes on the decorations and arches installed at Sanam Luang. I would like to take photos of the area," he said. Meanwhile, volunteers joined efforts in a bid to clean the city in preparation for the historic royal event.

Nevertheless, Mr McNeil explained he will follow the event on television or radio because it is more convenient.

"I won't go to Sanam Luang because it will probably be too crowded. Moreover, many foreigners don't know rules or directions," he said.

Mr McNeil added most expatriates he knows in Thailand have a high regard for the royal institution.

"They know the King is important to Thais, so they admire their loyalty."

Similarly, Leslie Seymour, a retired Australian cameraman, feels very excited about the momentous event because it will be the first time he sees a coronation.

"Although I am a foreigner, I am looking forward to the occasion," he said.

Unlike Mr McNeil, Mr Seymour has not followed the event because he was in Australia for over a month and returned to Thailand yesterday.

However, Mr Seymour said he will watch the coronation ceremony on television and celebrate with friends.

Meanwhile, a French expatriate, who wished to remain anonymous, said he does not know anything about the ceremony and its preparations. "Don't get me wrong. I think the King belongs to Thais. I am just a visitor," he said.
