Exit poll results show voters favour experience and judgment, potentially helping Clinton over Trump

Early results from the first exit polls suggest that voters may be backing Hillary Clinton.

CNN hasn't yet declared which of the candidates its exit poll is supporting. But some of the other information that has been released so far suggests that the Democratic candidate might be winning out.

Interviewers asked whether people were voting with the aim of choosing someone who could bring about change, or someone who had the right experience and good judgment.

Of those asked, 38 per cent said that they were looking for a change candidate. 22 per cent said that they were choosing someone who had the right experience, and the same number of people said they were looking for someone with good judgment. The remaining small number of people said that they were looking for someone who "cares about me".

Those results are thought to be positive for Clinton, given that her appeal is thought to be about experience and judgment. As such, her qualities scored a total 44 per cent, while Donald Trump as the change candidate received less.

CNN hasn't yet revealed who the people it interviewed at the polls had backed. Numerous tweets posted online and shared thousands of times suggested that either Mr Trump or Ms Clinton were winning, but all of those tweets are fake.
