An exhibition exploring yukata summer kimono designs and art based on time-honored Japanese sweets is currently underway at Toraya Confectionery Co.'s gallery in Tokyo Midtown Store in Minato Ward, Tokyo.
Exhibition "Yukata," which runs until Sept. 27, is supported by the long-established kimono store Chikusen in Tokyo's Nihombashi district.
On a wall in a corner of the exhibition, art derived from a book of Taisho-era (1912-1926) confectionary motifs has been set up side-by-side with Chikusen-designed yukata patterns. Eighteen panels featuring designs of seasonal plants, such as plum blossoms, hydrangeas and irises, are on display.
Other exhibits include rolls of yukata cloth and panels explaining the process of the traditional chusen dyeing technique for yukata, a common summertime Japanese garb.
Confections with designs frequently found on yukata are also available for purchase.
