Exhausted mum hits back after restaurant boss 'humiliates' her for breastfeeding

An exhausted first-time mum had a quick reply when she was "humiliated" by restaurant staff for breastfeeding her premature baby.

Elizabeth Herzog was feeding her five-month-old little girl Georgia, was born premature at 32 weeks weighing a tiny 3.5lbs, when the manager came over to make a comment.

He tapped on the shoulder and asked her to "cover up a little bit".

The family got up and left, with Elizabeth saying she felt "embarrassed and humiliated by the staff", but not before she had a few words with the manager of the Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews in Iowa.

Speaking to American TV channel WQAD, she explained that she doesn't like covering Georgia's head while breastfeeding as she is still quite fragile due to her premature arrival.

She said: "It doesn't seem like that big of a task but especially for her, I worry... I worry a lot because you can't see her face."

Before they left, Elizabeth went over to the manager to inform his of the law in Iowa.

It states: "A woman may breastfeed the woman’s own child in any public place where the woman’s presence is otherwise authorized."

She urges more restaurants to accommodate the breastfeeding laws, as well as helping to put mums at ease when feeding.

A spokesman the restaurant said: "It was not the restaurant management's intent to deny any right for the Guest to nurse -- nor did they deny that right -- or make her or any of our Guests feel uncomfortable, awkward or unappreciated."

Red Robin is exploring the complaint and are working on informing all staff of the laws.
