Exhausted 'Hare coursing' dog abandoned in North Berwick: the second abandoned dog in a week

A dog was found abandoned in North Berwick at the weekend by locals in the area.

The Lurcher Cross was found by a couple on Sunday 17 May looking exhausted and wearing a collar, however she was not chipped.

Kirsty a professional dog walker at Petitpaws, received a message by the couple who found the animal to scan her to look for a chip to see if an owner could be located, which sadly it couldn't.

Kirsty then posted on a host of different Facebook groups and the police to see if any reports had been made for a lost dog, a search that also came up empty.

This is the second incident of an abandoned dog being found in North Berwick, with the SSPCA announcing that they had to put a dog down from its injuries on 13 May after it was found at the side of a layby in the area.

The Border Collie was found with a serious open wound on its back end that had become infested with maggots, and was also wearing a collar.

Kirsty believes the Lurcher Cross was also abandoned, telling Edinburgh Live:

"We think this poor girl has been dumped possibly after hare coursing, she had done her job and not required anymore, however that is only speculation as the strange thing was she had a collar on.

"The people that found her fell in love with her straight away but unfortunately it wasn’t to be as they had cats, another kind hearted soul came forward and offered to temporarily foster her as no one had the heart to send her to kennels, so she is in temporary care just now and I’m in touch with them.

"The messages of support from people has been absolutely overwhelming, no one wants to see her go into Kennels and lots of people keen to foster her, we are taking it day to day just now and hopefully she will have that forever home soon"

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with any information on either of the incidents can contact the SSPCA helpline confidentially on 03000 999 999.
