EXCLUSIVE: Shotts plot West of Scotland league revolt after 20-team tier six snub

Shotts Bon Accord look set to spearhead a revolt against the West of Scotland League after plans for a 20 team tier six were confirmed.

Boss John McKeown revealed that Bonny have been in discussions with other clubs who are leaving the juniors following the collapse of the original proposal last week.

The conference system was turned down by the SFA as it would not be possible to add all of the teams to their Judicial Protocol.

A top flight at tier six with three teams promoted from the Championship and conferences below was then put through for the new-look set-up.

Raging McKeown has dubbed the changes “an absolute disgrace” with the club forced to battle it out in conference A despite a fourth place finish.

He stated the Hannah Park side “don’t intend to take this lying down” and have spoken to other clubs about fighting the ruling despite calming talks with the WOSFL last weekend.

The gaffer also claimed the Shotts hierarchy were left out of the consultation talks ahead of green lighting the proposal.

He called them "effectively club 21" after they were snubbed during the revamped plans.

“It’s a plan that has worked out to suit the bigger clubs and nobody else,” he went on.

“We finished fourth in the Championship and didn’t get a chance to finish our season, and now it looks like the teams who were totally gone from the top division are going to be added.

“We were told that we were all going to stick together to get the best for all clubs, and that hasn’t happened.

“How is it fair that Bonnyton Thistle get to go into the top flight and we don’t get the same chance? How can Rutherglen [Glencairn] and [Kirkintilloch] Rob Roy stay up? They looked like they were a certainty to go down.

“It’s really poor. Any team who had a realistic chance of getting promotion from the Championship will be frustrated just now. We don’t plan on letting this go away.”

He added: “It puts us at a real disadvantage when we try to attract players. They might have come and choose to play for us, but now fancy a shot at this new league.

“We’re going to be missing out on big travelling support as well. It’s an absolute shambles and our chairman is speaking to the other clubs to try and come up with a plan.

“I don’t see the necessity to rush anything through that is just to help the big clubs.”
