Exclusive: Rafa Benitez makes it crystal clear what he wants from Newcastle United hierarchy

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is prepared to go into extra time with Mike Ashley when it comes to his contract discussions.

Ashley and Benitez are yet to touch base despite some "positive talks" with managing director Lee Charnley last week.

But hopes of the deal being thrashed out before the end of the Premier League season are far from guaranteed and any sit down talks with Ashley may come in the week after the final day encounter with Fulham.

It remains to be seen whether Ashley decides to take a trip to Craven Cottage for the clash with the Londoners. However, Benitez has already indicated what he is likely to say to Ashley.

When asked if it was about his own personal demands, Benitez told the Sunday Sun: "There are a lot of things.

"But the main thing is if we can maximise the potential of this club. I am not happy when you have to play a game and think: 'If we can get a draw we'll be satisfied'.

"I want to be sure we can compete."

Benitez tried to explain exactly what he meant by that, and said: "At the moment it has to be with the top 10 teams then it depends on how strong you are.

"Then you can go closer, maybe the top six. My idea is to win every game if you can - I am not very happy when I can't."

The Toon boss, however, has no problems with living in the North-East - something that is currently working in favour of the powers that be.

Indeed, Benitez has been linked with some interesting offers around Europe including jobs in France, Italy and Spain.

Reflecting on his last three years on Tyneside, he said: "I am really happy here. I don't have any problems and the fans are fine. The people in the streets and people around are fine.

"The staff are good. There are a lot of positives here.

"The main thing is - can we compete? That is the problem."
