It's a tough job ... Dr Kinsey (right, played by Liam Neeson) and his team discuss what makes Americans get jiggy
Sex or statistics? Dr Alfred Kinsey liked a little of both, often at the same time. The ex-zoologist turned sexpert scandalised 1940s America with the publication of his Sexual Behaviour In The Human Male, which detailed the nocturnal activities of a generation that had previously believed that sex was to be had, but not heard. And it wasn't to be had that often.
Dr Kinsey, with his relentlessly scientific approach, showed that extra-marital affairs, masturbation and homosexuality were all far more common than the uptight establishment wanted to admit. In the film of his life story, Liam Neeson turns in an excellent performance as the love doctor, and Laura Linney was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress for her portrayal of his wife.
Twentieth Century Fox is releasing the DVD/VHS to rent or buy on July 11. But we here on the Guardian Unlimited Film pages have some exclusive footage of an alternate ending (RealPlayer) for the film to show you now. In the final scenes of the theatrical version, we see Kinsey as he is throughout the film: dedicated to his investigations. Indeed, it ends with him saying to his wife, "there is lots of work to do". We won't give away how the alternate ending differs, so why not take a look for yourself?
