K. Sirinun Kittiwaytang, ITD World Thailand Country Head recently had an exclusive opportunity to meet Dr. Marshall Goldsmith. Their conversation was interesting. Dr. Marshall shared what he does every day which has impacted the way he has become. “I have a daily question process. Each day I goes through a series of questions that represent what is most important in my life i.e. health, friends, family and work. In term of achieving his goal, a lot of them require discipline over time. Day to day there can be disappointments for most people because they put things off. They say I’ll do it tomorrow but tomorrow never comes and they don’t get it done. To be a success takes a lot of strict discipline, like having a personal trainer. That’s why people have personal trainers. They put them in shape and makes things work out all the time.”
Dr. Marshall also shared on how leaders engage their people. “I always suggest leaders ask their employees for input rather than give some generic answers. The input from people they lead can answer the questions better than the leaders. Then ask them to pick some important behaviours they need to improve. Talk to people about what they have learned to follow up on a regular basis what they have improved.”
Dr. Marshall is currently doing 100 Coaches Global Project, his passion is to mentor great coaches globally and gives away everything he knows, for free! The only “fee” is that the selected coaches do the same thing someday for others. The 100 coaches project has also been recognised as a top 8 business idea in the world for the last two years by Thinker50. Besides, this year 100 coaches project won the no.1 breakthrough idea award. He is now writing a book with Dr. Peter Chee, World #6 Coaching Guru and one of his 100 coaches, called “Stakeholders-Centred Leadership” which will be launched mid next year. The book will look at the whole concept of leadership and the new role of leaders as facilitators.
