Exclusive: Highly-rated Manchester City coach targeted by Stephen Kenny

Stephen Kenny has targeted Manchester City coach Brian Barry-Murphy in his bid to recruit a new member to his coaching staff.

It is understood that the former Cork City player has been contacted to gauge his interest in the role, which was vacated earlier this summer by John Eustace.

Eustace had only been in the job for a few months before he was appointed Birmingham City manager.

Cork-born Barry-Murphy is a highly respected coach. In July last year he was appointed as the manager of Premier League champions City’s Elite Development Squad.

His previous experience in management was with Rochdale.

A former Preston, Sheffield Wednesday, Bury and Rochdale player, his candidacy for the job on Kenny’s coaching staff could be complicated by his club commitments.

It’s a role that has had a high turnover since Kenny’s promotion to the senior side, with Damien Duff and Anthony Barry previously working alongside the senior boss.

Barry combined the role with his Chelsea first-team duties, but was head-hunted by Belgium boss Roberto Martinez ahead of the World Cup this winter.

And Eustace came in while coaching at QPR, but left in July when he landed the Birmingham job.

In preparation for the matches against Scotland and Armenia, Kenny has this week handed more responsibilities to chief scout Stephen Rice.
