Exclusive: Bristol Rovers to release defender Tareiq Holmes-Dennis

Tareiq Holmes-Dennis is set to be released by Bristol Rovers, Bristol Live understands.

The club is set to publish its retained list on Monday, and the left-back’s time in the blue and white quarters will end when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Since joining the Gas in 2018, the 24-year-old has showed glimpses of his undoubted talent, but he has been plagued by injuries.

In 29 appearances for the Pirates, the former Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town man scored once but left Gasheads wondering what might have been.

Knee niggles in particular have been a significant issue for the luckless defender, meaning he only played 178 minutes in the 2019/20 League One season across four appearances.

Holmes-Dennis’ place at Rovers has not been helped by the coronavirus shutdown, which has forced clubs across the EFL to cut costs and place increased importance on value for money.

With just eight appearances in all competitions this season, the England youth international’s injury record appears to have forced the club’s hand.

Holmes-Dennis’ next club will be getting a player with ability to be a dynamic threat on the left flank, but he will be desperate to string a run of games together.

Gas boss Ben Garner has handed a contract extension to left-back Michael Kelly this summer and the Scot will compete for the left-back spot.

It remains to be seen whether wing-back Luke Leahy will be retained – ex-Rovers boss Graham Coughlan refused to divulge lengths of contracts – or if Garner will recruit in that area.

Liam Sercombe's departure
when his deal expires on June 30 should be confirmed on Monday, with contract talks at an impasse. Ollie Clarke and Tony Craig are also out of contract at the end of the month, and their futures are uncertain.
