Exclusive: Bristol City and Chelsea defensive stars set for European Championships

Bristol City's Lloyd Kelly is heading to the Under-21 European Championships held in Italy and San Marino next month.

The left-back-cum-central defender will be named in Aidy Boothroyd's squad for the U21s that is officially confirmed on Monday 27 May, Bristol Live has learnt.

It's another feather in the cap for the Robins academy as they see one of their graduates heading to play in a high-profile international tournament.

And joining the 20-year-old will be Jay Dasilva, who has also enjoyed a good season at Bristol City as he has successfully made the left-back position his own towards the end of the campaign before returning to parent club Chelsea.

Kelly made 26 starts this season in the league and made a further six appearances from the bench and Dasilva made 21, with seven substitute appearances.

The pair played for the Young Lions in March as England drew 1-1 with Poland at Ashton Gate, with Kelly at centre-back and Dasilva on the left of defence, before Boothroyd's team lost to Germany down at the Vitality Stadium five days later.

England are in Group C of the competition, and will play France, Romania and Croatia at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi and the San Marino Stadium respectively, and are considered second favourites behind Spain, following their Toulon Tournament success of 2018 and semi-final loss in 2017.

While Dasilva has returned back to Chelsea there is hope that a deal will be agreed with the player that will see the full-back return to BS3 for next season.

Kelly, meanwhile, continues to attract admirers - such as Premier League Southampton - and there is genuine hope at the club that the prospect can go on and become the first Bristol City player to represent the full England side since John Atyeo in the 1950s.

Boothroyd told us of the pair following the recent U21s game held at Ashton Gate: "I thought Lloyd was fantastic.

"There was a bit in the game where he turned on his afterburners and the opposition player had five yards on him but Lloyd was five yards ahead of him by the end of it.

"He's a fantastic athlete and a very talented guy - and really he'd be one of the players that we talk about wanting to get the experience.

"And Jay: tonight [the 1-1 draw] has shown that they can both play in the same team. I've maybe given Lee a bit of a headache I guess, but that's good because we want as many of our players playing as possible."

Bristol City will be proud to see the calls when they are made official in two weeks.
