'Exciting' midfield talent Sofie Lundgaard becomes Liverpool's second January signing

Liverpool Women have announced the signing of Danish midfielder Sofie Lundgaard from Fortuna Hjorring.

The 20-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young prospects in the women's game, having racked up more than 100 appearances since making her senior debut at the age of 16. Lundgaard is also a Danish youth international, representing her country at Under-15, U17 and U19 level.

The midfielder has already trained with her new team-mates and will take the No.15 shirt at Liverpool after penning a two-and-a-half-year deal. The Dane's arrival on Merseyside is particularly welcome following the departure of Chelsea loanee Charlotte Wardlaw and she will bolster the Reds' attacking ranks as they look to ensure their survival in the Women's Super League.

"I’m excited, it’s been a pleasure coming here and I’m looking forward to meeting all the girls, getting started and winning some football games," Lundgaard told club media.

"I’ve heard a lot of times that this group is a good group and this is a club with ambitions, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it. When I spoke with Russ (Fraser) and Matt (Beard), I had no doubt that this club was a good option for me."

Reflecting on the challenge of playing in the top flight, Lundgaard added: "I’ve heard that every team is a good team and here every one can beat each other – I’m excited about that. I’m a powerful player, I like to play football, can also defend, get good possession and make a lot of goals."

Lundgaard is Liverpool's second signing of the January window following the return of former captain Gemma Bonner.

Looking ahead to what the new arrival can bring to the squad, manager Beard said: "Sofie is an exciting young talent who we’ve been monitoring for the past six months or so. I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring her in during the January window and it’s an area we were looking to strengthen in.

"She’s got terrific experience for such a young player – with more than 100 senior games. We’ve been really impressed with her progress so far and are looking forward to seeing how that continues in the future."
