'Exciting' chance to skinny dip in Nottingham lake

Brave swimmers are being urged to ditch their trunks and bikinis for a naked swim in the lake at Colwick Park. It's not the first time WholeHealth has organised a skinny dip, with one at the beginning and end of the season last year.

This year's event is taking place in conjunction with the British Naturism's Great British Skinny Dip on Saturday, July 9. Cat Wynne, founder of WholeHeath, which operates wild swimming sessions at the lake, said: "We have no idea now many people to expect. We had about 30 last year, but this year, being in conjunction with GBSD, we have had more interest.

"I think everybody should skinny dip at least once in their life! I think people enjoy it because it feels exciting, and gives a sense of freedom and connection with the water. In our case there is a really special connection with nature too as we will be swimming outdoors."

"Feeling the water all over your skin, especially colder water when swimming outdoors, is an exhilarating experience. It feels very brave, and for some people is a huge step for their body confidence. Doing it as a group with friends, and for a good cause is a great buzz."

Skinny dips are taking place across the UK during July and August, raising money for the British Heart Foundation. Cat said: "Most people will feel a bit nervous about getting naked outdoors in front of others. However if you do take the plunge you'll be in a supportive group of people all there for the same reason of enjoying an exciting new experience.

"All ages and body types can enjoy the freedom of swimming outdoors. If you are nervous or don't feel quite ready for the skinny dip, start by coming along for one of our regular open water sessions to try swimming in our beautiful lake."

WholeHealth run open water swimming sessions six days a week at Colwick, with regular beginner sessions for those new to swimming outdoors. The skinny dip is for early risers as it's from 6.30am to 7.30am, and costs £10. For more information go to greatbritishskinnydip.co.uk
