Excitement over plan to make Nottingham city centre alleyway 'look a bit nicer'

Proposals to open a community centre within an old bookmakers down a city alleyway will 'make it look a bit nicer'.

People were welcoming of the plans for the building in Long Row, of Nottingham's Old Market Square.

Max Gray, 67, a retired brick layer from Lenton, said he used the old betting shop but that there were others in the area.

"These businesses down here need more footfall and somewhere where people can come together.

"More people coming off the main street could replenish the area," he said.

"I hope it's not just a thing for students, though, as I think the city centre needs to have something for everyone in order for people to keep coming in."

Jessica May, 20, said the building was "tucked away".

The Nottingham Trent University Student, who lives in Hyson Green, said: "I guess it would be good for them to have something that makes people interested and notice the little alleyway.

"It looks untidy as well so it could help make it look a bit nicer."

Retail worker Chloe Baker, 28, spoke highly of the plan.

The Sneinton Resident said: "With Covid and everything I think it will be well used because people need that [kind of facility].

"Plus it doesn't really fit with the nice bookstore next door at all."

The building is run by Hockley Music & Arts Hub, and is hoped to be adapted into a community meeting place.

Plans have been put forward to change the use for the property.

The application, submitted by Victoria Hunt, of UK Leisure LTD, is under consideration.
