Excitement in village as Richard Whitehead prepares for Tokyo 2020 final

A Nottinghamshire village have shared its well wishes before Nottinghamshire Paralympian Richard Whitehead MBE competes for a medal in Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Whitehead will compete in the Men's 200m T61 final race at 11:42am on September 3.

The double Paralympic gold medal winner, who was born in Lowdham, is hoping to add to his tally after winning gold in London 2012's games as well as a silver and a gold medal in the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

Whitehead, who was born with no legs below the knee, runs on blades.

He was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2013 New Year’s Honours List.

In preparation for the race banners with words of support were placed next to the golden post box that was given to town after Whitehead's previous success.

Newark and Sherwood Councillor for Lowdham, Timothy Wendels, said: "Good luck Richard, everyone in Lowdham is rooting for you.

"All the best for your event, you've got this!"

Chair of Lowdham Parish Council Jacqueline Finn added: "We wish him all the best.

"He is a local bloke who has been inspirational for everyone, he's never been stopped from achieving he has wanted to do."

Local businesses also sent their messages of support.

The Lowdham Post Office on Main Street, where the Paralympian's gold post box was placed, said in a statement: "We wish him all the best of luck for the race.

"Everyone here is hoping he wins another gold medal to match our post box."

A spokesperson for Lowdham Salon on Main Street said "Good luck in Tokyo Richard, we all know you're going to smash it. Best wishes from everyone from the Salon and in Lowdham."
