Excitement for Spain holidaymakers as entry restrictions set to be axed

Holidaymakers who are not fully vaccinated should find it easier to travel to Spain soon, as the country's government is expected to ease remaining Covid restrictions.

As it stands travellers arriving from the UK must have proof of vaccination or a recovery certificate when entering the country, but these rules are likely to change from May 15, Hull Live reports. Even though the decision is yet to be confirmed, and people's hope for change has been denied a few times, Spanish health officials are expected to follow other EU nations and axe its strict rules which are currently in place until midnight on Sunday.

A statement from the Ministry of the Interior said: “This order will take effect from 12:00 pm on July 22, 2020, until 12:00 pm on May 15, 2022, without prejudice to its eventual modification to respond to a change in circumstances or new recommendations in the European Union.”

The rules currently state that people over the age of 18 who have not received a Covid vaccine can travel to Spain as long as they have evidence to show recovery from the virus within six months prior to travel. As well as this children between the ages of 12 and 17 can also enter, as long as they can show evidence of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before they are set to arrive.

Children under 12 are exempt from all travel restrictions. Other recent changes to restrictions in Spain have seen the lifting of domestic Covid rules, which made it essential for citizens to wear masks while in both indoor and outdoor public areas.

At the moment a mask is still mandatory in places like healthcare facilities, pharmacies and public transport among others. It's been reported that restrictions can rapidly change, so you should always check the Foreign Office's latest Spain travel advice before travelling.

Travel trade body ABTA said Spain was the most popular destination for tourists in 2022, as around 29.3 per cent said they planned to holiday there this year.
