Excitement builds as World Cup fan zone with big screen and bar opens in Old Market Square

Nottingham's Cricket World Cup fan zone has opened up to the public with a big screen, bar and street cricket sessions.

The zone at Old Market Square, which is free to enter, also has seating, cricket-based games and a DJ.

The big screen will show all World Cup matches - including today's opener between England and South Africa - until it closes on Sunday, June 2.

Hugh White, director of sport at Nottingham City Council, said: “We’re really excited to be welcoming the Cricket World Cup to Nottingham and very proud to be the first and the largest Fanzone of the tournament, right in the heart of the city.

“This is a great opportunity for people without tickets to watch and experience the World Cup and also to have a go at playing too.

"There is something for everyone at the local Fanzone. Best of all, there are no tickets or registration needed, just show up. We look forward to seeing you and hope you take up the invite to be part of the world’s greatest cricket celebration with us.”

The fan zone will be open from 10am-8pm every day, except on Saturday when it will be open until 10.30pm.

The games shows on the big screen will include the West Indies v Pakistan on Friday, May 31, and New Zealand against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
