Shoppers in Nottingham city centre are looking forward to a brand new independent Caribbean tapas restaurant that's set to open soon. New artwork has been installed on the shop front in Pelham Street for Spice Cay, which used to be the home of Ugly Bread Bakery before it moved to Carlton Street in early 2019 - it's stood vacant ever since.
According to its website, Spice Cay 'is a fusion of authentic Caribbean cuisine offering plentiful dishes, exotic ingredients and bold flavours'. It is a Nottingham independent restaurant, and will have two floors - the ground floor will have seating and a bar area, with the first floor hosting a balcony with more seats and tables.
A licensing application has been submitted to Nottingham City Council which, if approved in its current state, would see the restaurant open from 10am until 1am the following morning every day, with alcohol being sold until 30 minutes before closing. And while some shoppers in Nottingham want to see if it's to their liking first, they say it's good to see another independent restaurant added to Nottingham's roster.

George Taylor, 20, a student at University of Nottingham, said: "I don't tend to go to many restaurants but if I do, I normally go to chain restaurants that I am familiar with. I would be willing to try Caribbean food, however I would be unlikely to choose it ahead of my regular favourite places to eat out.
Ben Marshall, 21, an apprentice, said: "I think there's a good independent restaurant scene in Nottingham which is good to see. I have tried Caribbean good once and I found it very spicy, too spicy if anything!"
Ben Turlough, 48, said: "Me and my wife enjoy trying different restaurants and we have established a few favourites now. I'd always be open to trying new food, I'm sure in the next few years I'll visit this new place at least once."
