Excited Coleen Rooney wakes kids by blasting Three Lions ahead of England match

Wayne Rooney’s boys had something of a rude awakening on Wednesday as excitable mum Coleen blasted football music at them.

Sons Kai, 11, Klay, eight, and five-year-old Kit looked unimpressed as 35-year-old mum-of-four Coleen loudly played the currently unescapable Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home) pop song – made famous by The Lightning Seeds, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.

Tonight, England faces Denmark in the most high stakes match of football in essentially 50 years as Gareth Southgate and the boys hope to advance to the grand final of the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship.

And Coleen – who is married to retired England footballer Wayne, 35, and who she also shares three-year-old Cass with – clearly wanted her boys to get in to the spirit of football on Wednesday morning as she woke them up by playing the song that has been rousing spirits across England for weeks.

However, it looks like Kai, Klay and Kit are not impressed by the single when it is being played first thing in the morning.

Taking to Instagram Stories on Wednesday morning, Coleen shared video of herself entering her son’s bedrooms and waking them up with the music.

She included Gifs that had “come on England”, “Football’s coming home” and “Wakey, Wakey” written in animated writing as well as crying with laughter emojis.

The boys all looked unimpressed and bleary eyed as they were woken from blissful slumber by the catchy and popular song.

Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home) was originally released in support of the 1996 European Championships – which was hosted by England, but lost during the semi-finals in a match against Germany.

The single is romping up the charts again – with the Official Charts Company predicting it will reach number 6 when the top selling tracks of the week are reviewed on Friday.

If England make it through the semi-final match against Denmark on Wednesday night, it will be the first time the team has ever made the final of the contest.

While a win at the grand final on Sunday would mark England’s first international championship win since the still much revered 1966 world cup victory.

Songs supporting the team have swept England – with Fat Les’s 1998 tune Vindaloo set to enter the UK Top 40 for the first time since 2010.

And Atomic Kitten have reworked their 2001 track Whole Again for 2021 – making tribute to team manager Gareth Southgate.

England fans had already appropriated the previous number 1 hit single to change lyrics to state include the name of Gareth.

The new version, titled Southgate You’re the One (Football’s Coming Home Again), was officially released by the group – fronted by Liz McClarnon, Jenny Frost and Natasha Hamilton – on Tuesday.
