Exchange deal hope for Bali drug smugglers

Australia and Indonesia have agreed a prisoner exchange deal that could see convicted drug trafficker Schapelle Corby and seven of nine other Australians jailed for heroin smuggling in Bali sent home to finish their sentences.

The treaty, due to be signed in September, will apply retrospectively but will not cover the death sentences given in February to two of the nine Australians held in Bali who orchestrated the smuggling.

The minimum time prisoners should spend in local jails before being eligible for transfer has yet to be agreed, although it will be less than half the sentence.
