Excess deaths figure in the UK above 64,000 since coronavirus outbreak

The number of excess deaths in the UK since the coronavirus outbreak began has passed 64,000.

The ONS figures show 58,693 excess deaths in England and Wales between March 21 and June 5.

There was a slight increase of 885 deaths in the latest weekly figures which is being connected to the late May Bank Holiday.

In Wales there were 100 deaths registered in the week up to June 5 involving Covid-19, accounting for 14.3% of all deaths registered in Wales.

But the proportion of deaths occurring in care homes  in England and Wales decreased to 22.6%, while deaths involving Covid-19 as a percentage of all deaths in care homes decreased to 23.4%.

The National Records of Scotland found there were 4,769 excess deaths in Scotland between March 23 and June 7 while the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency put the figure for Northern Ireland at 940 excess deaths between March 21 and June 5.

Together this means the total number of excess deaths in the UK across this period now stands at 64,402. All figures are based on death registrations. 

The highest number of deaths and the highest proportion of coronavirus deaths were in those aged 90 years and over, where 18.2% of deaths involved Covid-19.

Looking at the year to date, the number of deaths up to June 5 was 307,289 in England and Wales, which is 53,848 more than the five-year average.

In Wales the number of deaths for that period was 17,968, which is 2,018 more than the five-year average. Of these 2,300 deaths (12.8%) mentioned Covid-19.
