'Exceptional' Bristol nursery gets Ofsted's top rating

A nursery staffed by "inspirational" leaders has gained Ofsted's best possible rating in a glowing report.

Knowle West Children's Centre, based at Inns Court Community Centre, has been judged as 'outstanding' in all areas for the second time in a row.

It was inspected on March 2 but there was a delay in the report being published on Ofsted's website, because of the school and childcare closures caused by coronavirus.

The report, released last week [May 12], said: "Children receive an exceptional early years experience at this wonderful nursery. Leaders are inspirational and have a clear vision for the nursery.

"Children show that they feel extremely safe and secure - they benefit from a highly impressive range of inspiring learning opportunities."

It was rated 'outstanding' in all five core areas of assessment, making it one of Bristol's best-rated nurseries.

The nursery had previously been inspected in 2014, when it was also rated 'outstanding'.

There were 31 children on roll when inspectors visited this time, aged between two and four.

The report described the nursery as "exceptionally inclusive" and said staff develop "incredibly close and trusting bonds with children".

Inspectors wrote: "Children are given the highest levels of care and support to develop to their full potential.

"Staff devise an outstanding curriculum which they adapt to expertly support children's different individual abilities and needs."

They said children were supported "exceptionally well" to regulate their own emotions and behaviour.

The report explained: "Leaders focus on ensuring staff have high levels of empathy.

"Staff have developed an amazing sensory space where children can go to relax and feel calm if they feel overwhelmed."

Staff were also praised for giving children's safety "the highest priority".

The report continued: "They have an outstanding knowledge of the signs and symptoms which may indicate that a child is at risk of harm and how to deal with any concerns they have.

"They have excellent knowledge of the needs of the children and families in their area, and exceptional knowledge of wider safeguarding issues and the signs that would concern them."

Links with the local community was also highlighted as an area of particular strength.

Inspectors said: "A well-established intergenerational programme runs once a week, when children delight in socialising with their elderly friends, and take part in baking and group games together.

"Children and their families benefit from regular trips and outings in the local community, and they visit local woods and farms.

"The nursery provides transport to ensure that all families are able to attend."

The provision registered with Ofsted in 2013 and is run by Knowle West Children's Centre Governing Body.

According to Ofsted, it provides free early years education for children aged two, three and four.
