'Excellent' backpacker hostel plan for heart of Glasgow's Merchant City

The centre of Glasgow could be set for a new backpacker hostel with renewed proposals for accommodation in the heart of the Merchant City.

Glasgow City Council are currently considering a fresh application to convert office space on the upper floors of Virginia House, a listed building, at 62 Virginia Street.

The plans have been put forward by Metro Inns Ltd, who operate a number of accommodation facilities across the UK.

A previous proposal from October 2014 was granted by the council, subject to a number of conditions, however lapsed 'due to a prolonged period obtaining the warrant and failures by the original contractor to notify the council of the start on site', with works having already taken place.

Documents submitted to the council state: "It is proposed on the first floor to create a reception, overlooking an open lounge and kitchen area. This is to allow staff to have maximum visibility on all residents.

"The lounge will incorporate large screen TVs, showing a variety of travel and various language channels and in this case, extolling the virtues of Scotland. It will also encompass local information in various languages to assist all residents.

"The existing rooms, which number circa. 30, will be changed into 30 separate bedrooms. Around 1/3 of them will have ensuite facilities with the present toilet facilities being converted to create communal shower and toilet rooms. Male and female dormitories are separate.

"Virginia House has all the right ingredients to make an excellent hostel. It is close to both Glasgow train stations and bus depots and Glasgow would be on most backpackers itinerary for touring Scotland."
