Examining Falcons DE Dante Fowler’s 3-year contract

The Atlanta Falcons made a big move when free agency began, signing defensive end Dante Fowler to a three-year, $48 million contract. With the country under heavy quarantine, though, contract details are understandably taking a bit longer to come out.

As tweeted by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure below, Fowler’s contract is back-loaded, with a 2020 base salary of $2 million and cap hit of just $6.6 million:

In 2021, Fowler’s cap number will jump to $18.6 million, then up to $19.6 million in 2022, according to Over The Cap’s projections.

The Falcons’ current cap number is listed at $7.92 million, but that doesn’t include Todd Gurley‘s one-year, $6 million deal.

Atlanta hasn’t exactly solved its cap issues, however, general manager Thomas Dimitroff has successfully found some wiggle room despite signing one of the biggest free-agent defensive ends on the market.
