Exam results appeal process for Scots pupils as young people face anxious wait

Scots secondary pupils face an anxious wait this morning as exam results are revealed across the country today.

The majority of young people in Scotland should receive their results from around 9.30am this morning.

And the whole process looks different once again this year after Scots schools were heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year saw exams cancelled, with an algorithm put in place to help with grading - taking into account the previous attainment of individual schools when grading estimates from teachers.

But many people were left furious at the system which saw almost 125,000 pupils get their grades downgraded - a disproportionate number of which came from poorer areas.

Exams were once again cancelled this year, but the controversial algorithm was scrapped and replaced with more of a focus on teacher estimates.

Pupils will also be able to appeal directly to the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) if they believe that their grades are unwarranted.

The SQA has issued a guide on how Scots pupils can appeal their exam results from today.

How to appeal this year’s exam results

All Scots pupils are eligible to appeal their exam results free of charge, according to the SQA website.

Teachers or lecturers will support all Scots pupils who decide to appeal and will provide them with all the information to make decisions in their best interest.

School, colleges and training providers cannot stand in the way of pupils making an appeal.

Scots seeking to put forward an appeal must submit their application by Thursday, August 12. The SQA says that anyone waiting for a particular result for a university or college place will have their appeal prioritised.

Pupils will need to provide the SQA with their name, date of birth, Scottish Candidate Number, subject and level of course that they wish to register an appeal for.

They will also be asked if they have a conditional university or college place, or an employment or training programme if they wish for their appeal to be prioritised.

The SQA says that priority appeals will be processed by Wednesday, September 8 to meet UCAS and employment/training timescales.

There are no limits on the number of appeals that Scots pupils can make.

The SQA states that the appeal will be based on the evidence of knowledge, understanding and skills in a course against the national standard. It adds that grades could go up, down or stay the same once the appeal process is completed.

Scots can register their appeal here.
