Exam board apologies to NI students after 'technical issue' with GCSE paper

An apology has been made to GCSE pupils following a technical issue with an exam paper.

Pupils from Lagan College, Belfast reported that their GCSE Computer Science paper was delayed by 30 minutes following the issue.

The WJEC exam board responsible for the exam said they were investigating the matter.

A spokesperson added: "We are aware of a technical issue with yesterday’s GCSE Computer Science paper, and are currently investigating the matter further.

"We would like to apologise to those who experienced difficulties, and would like to reassure those affected that no candidate will be disadvantaged."

When asked how many schools were affected by the glitch the WJEC said, as they are investigating the incident, they are unable to comment further, but schools in Wales also reported issues with the exam.

One parent, whose son was sitting the exam at Lagan College, said he also reported an issue with the final question on the exam, which was also noted by Welsh pupils.

She told Belfast Live: "I couldn't believe it when I heard of the delay. These children are sitting prepared to start an exam at a certain time and then it's delayed by half an hour.

"Some of the pupils had sat other exams that day and it is a long enough process for them anyway without this happening.

"It wasn't just the delay getting started but the final 16 mark question on Greenfoot seemed to have been affected by some kind of glitch as well. If this is the case then that's unforgivable.

"I know Lagan aren't responsible for what happened and it's not them I'm angry with, it's the exam board which has messed up.

"Computer Science is one of my son's better subjects and he's hoping to carry it on into A Level but now we're not sure what's going to happen."

Lagan College confirmed to Belfast Live that the exam was delayed by 30 minutes but insisted that students received the full allocated time to complete it. They added they had informed the exam board of the delay.
