Exactly what happens to unclaimed National Lottery cash prizes

The National Lottery offers a number of games each week allowing players the chance to win anything from a couple of quid to millions of pounds.

The state-franchised national lottery in the UK has now been running for more than 20 years.

Since it began, the National Lottery has made more than 5,500 millionaires across the UK and has awarded £71 billion in prize money.

There have been 659 lucky lottery millionaires from the North West.

All prizes are paid as a lump sum and are tax-free, with many lucky winners seeing their lives change forever.

Every winning ticket holder has 180 days to claim their prize, but what happens to the money that's left unclaimed?

If a valid claim is not received within 180 days of the draw date, then the prize and any interest earned will go to benefit National Lottery Projects across the UK.

A chunk of the money received for every ticket sold goes to a huge variety of projects — from repairing Scout huts to making Olympic and Paralympic champions.

The National Lottery retains around 1% of revenue in profit, while around 95% of total revenue goes back to winners and society.

A statement on the National Lottery's website reads: "More so, we run one of the most cost-efficient major lotteries in Europe, with around 4% of total revenue spent on operating costs."

The biggest unclaimed UK prize came from a ticket bought in June 2012, where a prize worth £63.8m was never picked up.

The unfortunate owner came from the Stevenage or Hitchin areas of Hertfordshire.

National Lottery players have helped to raise more than £41 billion for good causes, with more than 565,000 individual awards made across the UK – the equivalent of more than 200 lottery grants in every UK postcode district.

The total amount delivered to these projects depends on a number of variable factors. These include the mix of games sold, whether they’re bought in a shop or online, and the level of unclaimed prizes.

Currently the National Lottery website has eight unclaimed prizes listed on their website.

This includes one prize winner from Liverpool who hasn't claimed £1m as part of the EuroMillions.

They have until March 6 2022 to claim their prize, otherwise it will be distributed out to charitable projects.
