Exactly what caused M62 delays near Leeds and roundabout closure at Gildersome

An elderly man was taken to hospital after two cars collided on a roundabout near Leeds shortly after a traffic light failure.

A Volkswagen Polo and an Audi A6 estate collided on a roundabout on Gelderd Road, just off junction 27 of the M62 in Gildersome, at around 10.45am on July 6.

The crash happened shortly after a traffic lights failure on the roundabout, which was caused by an issue with the power supply.

The roundabout was closed while the emergency services dealt with the incident and Northern Powergrid engineers were called to fix the traffic lights.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police were called to a road traffic collision at the roundabout junction of Gelderd Road and Wakefield Road, Gildersome.

"A collision involving a black Volkswagen Polo and a Silver Audi A6 estate had blocked the road.

"No one was injured but the elderly male driver of the Volkswagen was taken to hospital to be checked over.

"The road reopened at 12.30pm after both vehicles been recovered."
