Exactly how long Liverpool's heatwave is set to last for as temperatures soar

Liverpool is set to enjoy a heatwave this week as temperatures soar into the high twenties with wall to wall sunshine.

The weather over the past couple of weeks has been hit and miss with rain and storms mixed with sunny spells.

But summer finally appears to have arrived on Merseyside and it could be set to stay for some time.

From Wednesday sunshine will dominate and the mercury will rocket, making it the perfect weather for summer picnics and barbecues.

Thursday is set to be slightly more cloudy but temperatures will remain in the low twenties and hot sunshine will return from Friday onwards.

Saturday and Sunday are set to be glorious without a cloud in the sky and highs of 25 are predicted on both days.

Monday will see more cloud, but temperatures are forecast to stay in the low twenties for the entirety of next week, with no rain showers currently forecast.

The Met Office forecast for the North West said: "Any overnight fog on Wednesday soon clears in the morning to give way to a dry day with plenty of sunny spells. Feeling warm, though slightly cooler near any western coastal areas. Maximum temperature 25 °C.

"Turning cloudier overnight, as some patchy low cloud moves in and allows for the occasional bit of drizzle. This slowly clears by morning, becoming mostly confined to the east. Minimum temperature 14 °C.

"Thursday will see a cloudy start with maybe the odd bit of drizzle, but the day soon brightens up to give some good sunny spells. Feeling warm. Maximum temperature 22 °C.

"Friday to Sunday will be dry with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures also increasing further to feel very warm, and hot in any sunshine."

The Met Office long range forecast for the entire UK from July 18 to July 27 said: "This period will continue to be influenced by an area of high pressure slowly moving across the UK.

"It's expected to be widely dry with plenty of sunshine developing on Sunday, however cloudy with perhaps some rain at times across the Northern Isles.

"Following this, it's likely that we'll see a good deal of dry weather with plenty of sunshine, at least at first.

"Through this period there's an increasing risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms developing from the South and West.

"Temperatures will continue to be very warm at first, and perhaps locally hot in central and southern areas, before probably becoming somewhat cooler and fresher from the southwest later next week heralding a change to a more unsettled spell towards the end of July."
