The wet weather will be with us for the majority of Friday and into the weekend with a yellow weather warning for thunderstorm s in place from 9am on Friday until 10am on Saturday.

The weather warning said: "Slow moving thundery downpours may cause localised surface water impacts.

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services."

The weather forecast for the entire North West said: "Today will see a largely cloudy start to the day, with just the odd sunny spell in places. A band of heavy, showery rain will then move in from the west during the afternoon. Strengthening winds.

"This evening, the rain should gradually clear away to the east, but heavy, thundery showers will linger in places. Overnight, there will be scattered showers in between a few, brief clear spells.

"Tomorrow, a moderate westerly breeze will bring cloud and scattered showers for many. These can be heavy, and thundery in places. It will become drier later in the evening, with some late sunshine.

"Saturday will be breezy with frequent and heavy showers for all. During the afternoon, it should become drier and brighter with some sunshine, but a few showers will linger in places.

"Sunday will continue to be breezy and after a relatively dry start, it will then turn unsettled with heavy showers. Monday is set to remain unsettled, with heavy afternoon showers."
