Exact location of today's 208 Covid-19 cases in Ireland and what it means for 'local lockdowns'

The majority of today's 208 new Covid-19 cases were again in Dublin with the county expected to see tighter restrictions after Tuesday.

The Department of Health announced a further 108 cases in the capital after similar figures every day for the last week.

Louth was the next highest with 18 confirmed today with Donegal, 12, and Meath, 10, both not far behind.

After a huge jump of 22 on Sunday, Waterford saw eight more which might ease concerns of local restrictions there.

'Local lockdowns'

One of the key statistics the Department of Health will be using to assess so called local lockdowns is the 14 day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

By this measure, and not taking account today's figures yet, Dublin is by far the hardest-hit area in the country, with a rate of 89.1.

This is followed by Limerick on 65.7, and Leitrim on 65.5.

The threshold for placing Kildare, Laois and Offaly on a local lockdown was approximately 80, so counties outside of Dublin should be safe for now.
