Exact location of 2,001 new Covid cases as new nationwide trend emerges and two counties see big spike

Almost every county in Ireland has recorded a welcome drop-off when it comes to the number of daily Covid cases.

The Department of Health tonight reported 2,001 new infections around the country – as well as 93 tragic deaths.

Of the cases confirmed on Tuesday, 701 were in Dublin, 204 were in Cork, 102 were in Waterford, 98 were in Meath, 90 were in Donegal and the remaining 806 were spread across the other 21 counties.

In most places, it seems Level Five restrictions introduced at the end of December are having the desired effect, with Waterford and Meath – both of which saw a big jump today – among the only exceptions.

Meanwhile, Monaghan-folk will be patting themselves on the back this evening after public health bosses reported fewer than five cases – down from 99 on Monday.

In other metrics, today's infections saw 892 cases among men and 1,098 among women.

Some 55% of those infected are under 45 years old, with the median age standing at 42.

As of 2pm today, 1,949 Covid-19 patients were hospitalised, of which 202 were in ICU at 11am.

There were 100 new hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

This evening, Dr Tony Holohan said that Ireland is "starting to see" the results of Covid-19 lockdown measures.

But the Chief Medical Officer warned the public not to lower its guard after a staggering number of deaths were recorded by public health experts.
