Exact date Scotland's 'Highland Heat Dome' to end as summer 2021 one of hottest on record

Scotland is on course for one of the hottest summers since records began thanks to a 'Highland Heat Dome' trapping in hot air this month.

The Met Office said warm conditions in Scotland and and Northern Ireland have helped bump up 2021's summer to the UK's top 10 on mean temperature.

Temperatures are at around ten degrees higher than average caused by a "Highland Heat Dome", according to Sky News weather presenter Kirsty McCabe.

She said high pressure sitting over Scotland combined with light winds and strong sunshine 'has allowed temperatures to rise day on day.'

Scotland has also officially recorded a heatwave this week, having seen temperatures over 25C for three consecutive days in Tyndrum in Perthshire.

The small village reached up to 27.2C on Wednesday which forecasters say is a 'heatwave, albeit a very localised one'.

The Met Office says the warm weather and sunshine is expected to last for the next 10 days, as an Omega block - or 'Highland Heat Dome' - forms over the UK.

This horse-shoe shaped block, named after the Greek letter omega, is stopping rain and wind from reaching Scotland and keeping temperatures dry and warm.

Met Office forecasters say there is a '100% chance of high pressure' for the next five days, in a rare forecast causing some good spells of weather.

Forecasters say Wednesday was the peak of the warm temperatures, but that things will remain sunny, warm and dry well into next week.

This spell of good weather is set to last until the second week of September before unsettled weather, including some showers, will descend over Scotland.

It comes as Scotland could be on target to be one of the warmest on record, with Scotland so far recording just 62% of its average rainfall for the season at 188.1mm.

In a statement, the Met Office said it's a few days off announcing a definitive ranking in September - but the figures show the UK's mean temperature for summer was around one degree higher than average at 15.4C.

The highest temperature recorded in Scotland in 2021 was 29.3C in July at Threave, near Castle Douglas.

Scotland's highest ever recorded temperature was 32.9C in August 2003 in Greycrook, the Scottish Borders.
