Exact date of second heatwave as UK finally cools down after week of 30C rays

The Met Office has revealed the date of a second potential heatwave heading for the UK as the country cools down from the last few days of sweltering heat.

Temperatures have soared above 30C for many Brits in the last week, with Tuesday officially the hottest day of the year so far.

However Met Office's first extreme heat warning in Britain has now come to an end, with rain and thunderstorms expected this weekend.

Forecasters have even issued yellow weather warnings for downpours and strong winds tonight.

But the wet weather will not last for long as there could be another heatwave in the second week of August.

The Met Office long range forecast for August 6 to August 20 is predicting a return of the warm weather.

It says: "To begin the period, mixed conditions look likely to remain for a few more days, with no dominant weather type.

"Drier conditions with sunny spells are likely to be interspersed with showers or longer periods of rain.

"As we head further towards mid-August, it is most likely to become more settled with drier and warmer conditions developing.

"However, as with all long range forecasts, confidence become lower towards longer timescales."

The service tweeted: "Heavy #rain and #thunderstorms will bring an end to the #heatwave in many central and southern areas this weekend.

"A rain warning comes into effect from Friday night with flooding possible in places over the #weekend weather would, an extreme heat warning is still in force in Northern Ireland."

However, temperatures are still high across the country, even though they are down on the past few days.

England reached its hottest temperature of the year on Tuesday when 32.2C was recorded at Heathrow Airport in west London, and on Thursday a sizzling 31.1C high was recorded in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.

Despite the amber heat warning expiring in England just before midnight on Thursday, temperatures are expected to hit balmy highs of 27C or 28C in Ross-on-Wye today.

Wales basked in its highest temperature of the year so far on Thursday with 31.2C in Gogerddan - and it will remain hot today with the mercury climbing to as high as 29C.

Scotland also recorded its highest temperature of the year so far with 29.3C in Threave.

Speaking about the extreme heat warning that was in place in England, Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "It's an amber warning so it's quite an extreme one, and it's for extreme heat.

"So for a few days we've had their highest ever temperature. It was beaten yesterday, it was beaten again today, and it could well be beaten again tomorrow.

"So I think it could be four days within a week where they've recorded their highest ever temperature."
