Exact date heavy snow will hit UK with temperatures plummeting before Christmas

Those in the North East should be searching out their hats, scarves and sledges as Newcastle is the English city with the highest chance of seeing a White Christmas in the UK, according to bookies.

An icy freeze of -1C is expected to hit on Tuesday December 21 with one forecaster saying certain areas of the country could see up to 10 inches of snow on Christmas Day, reports the Mirror.

And an official from the Met Office told LBC that the odds of a White Christmas across the country aren't too low.

With odds of 3/1 for snow on Christmas Day, Newcastle is the most likely city in England to have a white Christmas, followed by Leeds at 7/2.

Chances increase further north of the border, with Newcastle given the same probability as Edinburgh and Glasgow, behind the UK's overall most likely city to see snow Aberdeen, which has odds of 5/2.

The region has already been hit by snow in the last month, when Storms Arwen and Barra brought it along with gale force winds, leaving motorists stranded in snow in County Durham.

And the Met Office predicts it will get even colder towards New Year.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “At the start of this period it will be settled and predominantly dry with large amounts of cloud, though cloud may well be thick enough for the odd spot of drizzle at times.

“In general, cloud amounts will tend to reduce with time, with a corresponding increase in the risk of overnight fog and frost, which may be slow to clear by day in some areas."

In terms of the weather in the run up to Christmas, conditions are expected to get more unsettled, with wintry conditions across different areas.

Drier weather is generally expected along with variable cloud cover, but showers are possible on the northern and eastern coasts.

Forecasts say it will turn colder in the North, and low temperatures are likely to bring overnight frosts and an increased likelihood of fog.
