Exact Covid-19 death toll in Leeds confirmed as care home fatalities added to total

More than 640 people have lost their lives to coronavirus in Leeds.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show the virus had caused the deaths of 645 people in the city by June 5, the most up-to-date total available for this overall figure.

According to the data, 367 coronavirus patients have died in Leeds hospitals and 244 people have lost their lives to the virus in the city's care homes.

Another 22 coronavirus deaths have occurred at Leeds homes and 11 have died at hospices.

The week that began on Monday, April 13 was the worst for coronavirus deaths in Leeds, as 74 people lost their lives.

The ONS states that 45,432 coronavirus-related deaths occurred in England and Wales between December 28 and June 5.

During that same period, the government recorded 36,127 coronavirus deaths.

The government has started easing strict lockdown restrictions, but people are still being urged to stay at home as much as possible and remain at least two metres away from other people, as there are concerns about a second wave.

This week, shops across England reopened after a three-month lockdown, but restaurants, pubs, hairdressers, hotels and cinemas will not be allowed to open until 4 July at the earliest.
