A former youth worker in the NSW Hunter region is facing 15 charges for historical sex crimes allegedly committed against two boys between 1990 and 2004.

The 71-year-old man from Marks Point was arrested on Thursday morning following an eight-month investigation.

The charges include sexual intercourse with children, supplying prohibited drugs, and committing aggravated indecent assault on someone under the offender's authority.

They were allegedly committed over a 15-year-period in Muswellbrook and Gateshead.

The man has been refused bail and will appear at Newcastle Local Court on Friday.
