Ex-youth worker arrested and charged in connection with sexual offences

A former youth worker has been arrested and charged in connection with sexual offences.

Stephen Henderson, 30, worked with vulnerable youngsters as association manager at the Bellshill and Mossend YMCA in Lanarkshire.

It comes after an internal investigation was launched in January following concerns raised at the club.

A leaked memo from earlier this year revealed that Henderson had been suspended during a probe.

It read: “I want to reassure you Stephen Henderson has been suspended while an investigation into allegations is undertaken in line with Bellshill YMCA’s child protection policy and procedures.

“The board of management is working to complete that investigation as quickly as possible and is not trying to cover anything up.

“Confidentiality is integral to any child protection investigative process in order for the investigation to remain objective and respect the individuals who raised complaints.

“It is therefore not appropriate or possible or the board to make any comment until the investigation is concluded.” It’s believed cops got involved later.

Greater Glasgow Police Division said: “A 30-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with sexual offences. He was released for report to the procurator fiscal.”

Henderson has been contacted for comment.
