Ex-Tottenham wonderkid Marcus Edwards returns with a bang with rocket goal in Portugal

Former Tottenham Hotspur academy product Marcus Edwards returned to match action with a powerful strike in the Portuguese league.

The 21-year-old left Spurs last summer, with the north London club's retaining a 50 per cent sell-on fee following his move to Liga Nos side Vitoria.

Edwards had been enjoying a promising first season in Portugal before the shutdown of football.

The youngster has scored seven goals and laid on seven assists in his 28 matches for Vitoria during this campaign.

That has placed him in the top ten of the most productive attacking midfielders in the league.

Edwards picked up where he left off when Liga Nos resumed this week and he fired home the equaliser in the 68th minute in Vitoria's 2-2 draw with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday night.

The talented dribbler posted the goal on his Instagram account - it can be found by scrolling past the images by clicking on the arrow on the right in the post below.

He timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and collected a chipped pass into the box.

Edwards took two touches to steady himself and dig the ball out from under his feet before sending a rocket of a shot into the roof of the net as the goalkeeper advanced towards him.

Having played in the Europa League this season as well, Edwards has enjoyed a real boost in his development, following on from an important experience in the Eredivisie last season, playing for Excelsior Rotterdam.

Edwards struggled to breakthrough at Tottenham under then manager Mauricio Pochettino, despite the Argentine once claiming his gait reminded him of a young Lionel Messi.

The midfielder's only appearance for Spurs competitively was in a League Cup tie from the bench but his career now looks to be on the up.

If he continues to impress then Vitoria will struggle to keep him in the next transfer window and Spurs will gain some much needed funds from that sell-on clause.
