Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram down: Ex-Tottenham star speaks out on global outage

Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has joked with the news that Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down.

The social media platforms confirmed on Twitter that they are well aware of the issues presenting them and are working to resolve them as soon as possible.

Facebook took to Twitter to say: "We're aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products.

"We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience."

Meanwhile, Instagram said: "Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a hard time right now, and you may be having issues using them. Bear with us, we're on it! #instagramdown".

With Twitter being one of the only social media websites working right now, at the time of writing, many people have taken to the site to joke about the high-profile outages.

One of those people is Vertonghen, who left Tottenham in the summer of 2020, who referenced former social media messenger website MSN.

He simply tweeted: "MSN?"

According to downdetector, the outage on the trio of social media websites is global, rather than just in one country.

A statement from the website read: “Facebook is currently experiencing a rarely seen global outage that is taking out Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

"No word yet from Facebook on what caused the outage, but as of 9.30am PDT [5.30pm BST], we’ve seen over 5.6 million reports about issues with the company’s services from around the world.”

Twitter, when taking to its official account on its own website, are having some fun amid the outage.

They tweeted: "Hello literally everyone", with Twitter being one of the only social media websites that are up and running at the time of writing.
