Ex-Tottenham star offers damning verdict on former club in Ange Postecoglou advice

Ange Postecoglou should stay with Celtic because Tottenham are not a “reputable big European club” according to former Spurs star Ramon Vega.

Postecoglou has emerged as a leading contender for the Tottenham job after number one choice Arne Slot ruled himself out. Slot has decided to stay with Dutch champions Feyenoord rather than move to north London, while former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann and Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso are also out of the running.

Celtic are on the brink of securing a domestic treble, having already lifted the Scottish Premiership title and League Cup this campaign. And Postecoglou’s work with the Glasgow giants has attracted interest from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

According to the Scottish Sun, the 57-year-old manager is set to be appointed Tottenham manager imminently. Spurs are hoping to tie up a deal after the Scottish Cup final against Inverness on Saturday and Celtic are already looking for replacements.

But Postecoglou is making a mistake by taking the Spurs job, according to Vega, who believes he would be better advised to stay with Celtic or aim higher.

He tweeted: “If Ange Postecoglou wins the treble for @CelticFC the next challenge shouldn’t be managing @SpursOfficial but fighting for playing in the Champions League for @CelticFC or going to a reputable big European Club which Spurs unfortunately is for sure not one of them at the moment.”

Tottenham finished eighth in the Premier League this season and will therefore not be involved in any European football in 2023/24. They endured a miserable campaign, with Antonio Conte, Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason all spending time in charge.

Spurs could be about to lose top-scorer Harry Kane in the summer transfer window, with Manchester United among the suitors for the England captain. Kane enjoyed a wonderful campaign, scoring 30 times in the Premier League, but only has one year left on his contract.

His departure would come as a huge blow to the incoming Spurs boss, who will already have a big task on their hands. Tottenham have not won a trophy since 2008 and are desperate to change their fortunes following the failures of big-name managers Jose Mourinho and Conte.

Tottenham fans have regularly protested against club chairman Levy and owners ENIC and will expect a strong appointment after seeing their much-loved former boss Mauricio Pochettino join rivals Chelsea.

Although he has been successful at Celtic, Postecoglou has never managed in a top five European league. He has coached Brisbane Roar, Australia and the Yokohama F. Marinos before taking the Celtic job in 2021.

The Australian has won 73 per cent of his matches with Celtic, claiming back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles and Scottish League Cups. He is reportedly keen to test himself in the Premier League and Celtic’s hierarchy won’t stand in his way if Tottenham do try to appoint him.
