Ex-Tipperary goalkeeper Darren Gleeson appointed as Antrim senior hurling manager

Former Tipperary goalkeeper Darren Gleeson has been appointed as the new Antrim senior hurling manager.

Gleeson was part of Saffrons’ management team alongside Neal Peden this year as well as doubling up as Tipperary’s goalkeeping coach under fellow Portroe man Liam Sheedy as the Premier reclaimed the All-Ireland title.

Gleeson becomes the second Tipperary native to manage Antrim after Dinny Cahill, whose second stint in the job ended in 2011.

The 38-year-old won two All-Irelands with Tipperary, the first as Brendan Cummins’ understudy in 2010 but he emerged as the first choice following Cummins’ retirement in 2013, winning an All Star in 2014 and his second All-Ireland two years later.

There was further significant movement in Antrim hurling this evening with Peden announced as the county’s first director of hurling, thereby relinquishing the senior hurling manager’s role.

2019 wasn’t a remarkable year for Antrim as they failed to make the Division 2A final or the Joe McDonagh Cup decider and Gleeson will be looking to earn promotion to the top tier in both League and Championship next year.

Meanwhile, Lenny Harbinson has been reappointed as Antrim senior football manager for a third season.
